Impact Doors vs. Average Doors

Many Southwest Floridians are replacing their average, “builder’s standard” entry doors with impact doors. Why make the switch? It doesn’t look like there’s anything wrong with your current door.

Under normal conditions, that’s probably the case. But do you trust your door to hold up against the impact of Southwest Florida’s unpredictable weather? Read on as we discussseveral reasons冲击门是正确的选择。

What’s the difference?

The average entry door is generally constructed of two steel facings (skins) and an insulating filler. Many entry doors also include a solid wood block where the handle and lock attach for added security. Standard door frames are made of wood or aluminum. While this construction is generally safe, those that live in areas that may be impacted by hurricanes or tropical storms (like Southwest Florida) should consider a higher level of protection. A standard door is going to be sorely tested when the intense winds that accompany a hurricane, start to swirl.

Impact doors, on the other hand, are made of materials that have been tested and approved to withstand the most severe weather conditions. Composed of thick, fiberglass skins with wood and composite reinforcements, impact doors have specialized polyurethane foam cores that will better protect you and your family in the event of a storm. Reinforced hinges and beefed up door frames ensure the door isn’t going anywhere, under any conditions.

What would happen in a hurricane if your door was breached?

A breached door, window, or garage door due to an impact during a hurricane can mean disaster for your home. Once an opening has been made, the high winds, rain, and additional debris entering your home can destroy walls, furnishings, and evensend your roof flying off! Securely closed doors can help ensure that your home will still be standing when the storm passes.

Florida law states that insurance companies are required to offer discounts and incentives to those that install windstorm mitigation equipment – including impact rated doors and windows. Be sure to contact your insurance agent once you’ve made your upgrade!
